#8/10 Women's Hockey Blanked By Northeastern, 4-0, Friday Night

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the young 2014-15 season on Friday night as the Northeastern Huskies defeated the Lakers, 4-0, at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Northeastern (1-0-2) earned its first victory of the season after playing back-to-back ties last weekend. Mercyhurst, meanwhile, dropped to 3-1-1 on the campaign.

It was just the fourth meeting between the two schools and was the first contest since the Huskies handed the Lakers a 2-0 loss on October 13, 2001. Mercyhurst dropped to 0-4 lifetime against Northeastern.

Friday's setback was the first time the Lakers had been shutout since Cornell beat Mercyhurst 4-0 on January 29, 2013 in Ithaca, New York. Meanwhile, it was the first shutout at home since Clarkson defeated Mercyhurst, 3-0, at the Ice Center on October 19, 2012.

Northeastern's Kendall Coyne, who played on the U.S. Olympic Team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, paced the Huskies with a goal and two assists while attempting ten shots on goal. Her shorthanded, empty-net goal at the 19:46 mark of the third period put the icing on the cake for the visitors. Ainsley MacMillan chipped in with a goal and an assist in the Northeastern victory.

After a scoreless first period, the Huskies got on the board with a power play goal from Lauren Kelly at the 1:56 mark of the second. Her blast from the left point beat senior Amanda Makela over the right shoulder to give Northeastern, what proved to be, the only goal it would need. MacMillan and Coyne had the assists.

Paige Savage added another goal for the visitors at the 4:48 mark when she banged home a rebound off a shot from Chelsiea Goll that hit the crossbar during a 2-on-1 break.

MacMillan and Coyne added goals in the third period for the final margin.

Mercyhurst outshot Northeastern, 26-24, for the contest, including a 22-15 margin over the final two periods. The Lakers also owned the faceoff dot on Friday night, winning 36-of-61 draws. Emily Janiga attempted a team-high five shots on goal and also won 16-of-24 faceoffs.

Makela suffered the loss, stopping 20 shots in defeat. The senior dropped to 3-1-1 on the season. Chloe Desjardins stopped all 26 shots in the shutout.

The same two teams will meet again at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday afternoon to close out the weekend series. Faceoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
