Men's Basketball Closes with 14-0 Run to Overtake Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team won, 57-47, at Seton Hill Wednesday night. The Lakers went on a game-closing 14-0 run to take the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest at the McKenna Center.

The Griffins hit a jumper to go ahead, 47-43, with 5:18 remaining. The Lakers would not allow another point as they rallied to move to 7-2 in the Western Division. Jonathan Ouegnin and Andy Hoying got things rolling with Ouegnin finding Hoying for a three-pointer. Callon Dailey followed with a layup from Ouegnin to take a 48-47 edge with 4:28 to go.

After a defensive stop, Jean Onana finished with a high-arcing bucket for a three-point difference. The Lakers made another stop and then Onana hit a jumper with 1:50 left. Ouegnin then made a steal and set up Dailey for a fast break layup. On the next possession, Ouegnin made another steal and found Dailey for another breakaway hoop and a 56-47 lead. Mercyhurst's six points in 35 seconds turned the game around and put the visitors in control.

Dailey led with 12 points and four rebounds. Ouegnin posted five points, eight boards, six assists, and five steals. Hoying put up eight points and four rebounds, while Onana and Anthony Lytle each scored six points. Malachi Leonard led Seton Hill with 10 points and 13 rebounds, but did not score in the second half.

Mercyhurst had a strong start, as Ouegnin scored inside and then Dailey hit two jumpers, putting the Lakers ahead, 7-0, after five minutes. The hosts came back with a pair of three-pointers, Hoying connected to put Mercyhurst up, 9-6, with 13:19 left in the period.

Another Griffin three put the home team back ahead, but Ouegnin tied the game on a layup and then Beau Samuelson hit a trey for a 14-13 edge at the 9:48 mark. A Lytle basket stretched the margin,but four straight SHU points put the hosts back ahead. Samuelson found Lytle for a lay-in, but the Griffins answered with two buckets. H'ian Hale made a nifty move inside and scored, but Seton Hill eventually went up, 25-20.

James Ewing had a tip-in and then Hoying sank a triple to even the score with 2:58 remaining in the period. A late bucket gave the Griffins a 30-25 halftime lead.

Mercyhurst improved to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in the PSAC. SHU fell to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Lakers have the weekend off before traveling to California (Pa.) on Wednesday, February 5.
