ERIE, Pa.- The #7 Mercyhurst field hockey team lost to #1 Shippensburg, 5-1, Tuesday afternoon. Blair Pembleton scored the Laker goal in the non-conference match played at Tullio Field.
Mercyhurst earned six penalty corners in the first half, but was unable to convert. The Raiders scored twice in the middle of the frame, as Lauren Taylor and Megan Jett each had a goal.
The Lakers controlled the action early in the second half. A loose ball ended up being played by Pembleton, who moved right and shot into an open cage, cutting the deficit to 2-1 just 37 seconds into the second period. Mercyhurst picked up several penalty corner attempts in the first few minutes of the half, but Ship turned the Lakers away each time.
A penalty stroke by Suzanne Muller and Taylor's second goal of the day gave Ship a 4-1 advantage with 25 minutes remaining. Ari Saytar capped the scoring at the 61:54 mark.
The Lakers posted 12 penalty corners to nine for Ship. Jess Wess made five saves in goal.
Mercyhurst dropped to 3-3 with the loss. Shippensburg is now 7-0. The Lakers open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Friday, September 27, at East Stroudsburg.
