#12 Men's Soccer Blanks University of D.C. 2-0 Monday

Freshman Danny Deakin tallied his fifth goal of the season against the University of District of Columbia to win 2-0.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Danny Deakin of the No. 12 Mercyhurst University men's soccer team scored in the first four minutes to lead the Lakers to a 2-0 non-conference win over the University of District of Columbia Monday.

The Lakers improve to 5-2-0 in the season. The University of District of Columbia fell to 4-3.

Deakin, a freshman from Sheffeld, England, tallied his fifth goal of the season at the 4:14 mark of the match. Deakin received a pass from junior Fernando Martinez, and beat a Firebirds' defensemen 18 yards out. He now is second on the team in goals (5) behind Martinez.

At the 23:51 mark of the contest, senior Matt Campana extended the lead by scoring from 15 yards away. Martinez colleted his second assist of the contest on the goal.

The Lakers defense held off the Firebirds by allowing only a game total of 12 shots attempted. Mercyhurst had 20 attempted shots, with eight reaching goa,l and continued their streak of outshooting every opponent this season.

Goaltender Mikko Sarkkinen (5-2) picked up his second shutout of the season, making three saves. Firebirds' goaltender Louis Connor (4-3) allowed two goals on eight shots faced.

The Lakers will host two PSAC conference matches this coming weekend starting on Friday, September 27 with Shippensburg University, then concluding the weekend with a match against Millersville on Saturday, September 28. Both contests will be played at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field, kickoffs beginning at 4:30 p.m.
