Women's Hockey Blasts the Whitby Wolves 9-1 on Sunday

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's hockey team routed the Whitby Wolves on Sunday 9-1. The Lakers completed their preseason with two wins.

Mercyhurst wasted no time putting up the first goal on the board, as junior assistant captain Molly Byrne tallied her first goal of the preseason only four minutes into the first period. Defenseman Caroline Luczak had the assist.

Senior Kaleigh Chippy notched an even strength goal at 7:23 after tipping the puck past Whitby goaltender Hannah Baker to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Junior Shelby Bram would extend the lead on a power-play goal at the 16:05 mark.

Whitby's Jaimie Grigsby scored the Wolves' only goal before the end of the period on a power-play at the 16:48 mark. Grigsby intercepted a Mercyhurst pass in front of goaltender Julia DiTondo to narrow the Lakers' lead to 3-1.

The Lakers scored four goals in the second period, including two by senior Christine Bestland. Bestland tallied a power-play goal at the 4:48 mark and an even strength at 8:22.

A minute later, senior Christie Cicero tallied her only goal of the contest off of a pass from senior Kaleigh Chippy to extend the lead to 6-1. Sophomore Emily Janiga concluded the second period scoring after Whitby had just finished a penalty kill. Janiga flipped the puck past Baker with one second remaining in the period. Paige Horton and Jillian Skinner notched the assists.

Janiga tallied an early goal at the 2:07 mark of the third, assisted  by freshman Megan Whiddon. Chippy would score the game's final goal at the 18:41 mark,  her second goal of the contest and the 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Julia DiTondo played the entire 60:00 minutes for Mercyhurst, making 13 saves on 14 shots faced. Baker made 41 saves of 50 shots faced throughout her 60:00 minutes. The Lakers attempted 50 shots on goal throughout the entire contest. Chippy led the team with 13 shots attempted; Janiga had six, while Cicero attempted five.

Ten different Lakers contributed to the 9-1 win, with six recording at least one goal. Bestland (2 g, 1 a), Chippy (2 g, 1a), Janiga (2 g, 1a), Skinner (3 a), Bram (1 g, 2 a), and Byrne (1g, 2a) all had a multi-point game.

The Mercyhurst Lakers open their 2013-14 season with a trip to Minnesota State-Mankato on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28. Both contests are set to begin at 7:07 p.m. EST and 2:07 p.m. EST respectively. The Lakers will then host Ohio State University on October 5, 2013 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
