Men's Soccer Upends Salem International 4-1

ERIE, Pa. – Junior Fernando Martinez scored two goals as the Mercyhurst University men's soccer team beat Salem International 4-1. The Lakers improved to 4-2-0 in the season while Salem International falls to 2-3-0.

Freshman Gregory John Andrews tallied his first collegiate goal as a Mercyhurst Laker, and also gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at the 21:12 mark of the first half. The lead would continue until time expired in the first half, giving the Lakers the advantage heading into the locker room. Junior Dane Rimko was awarded the assist.

Salem International struck back, scoring the equalizer only 15 minutes into the second half. The Tigers Jose Huergo was given at pass from Michael Brunton at the 17 yard mark at the 60:35 mark.

Just six minutes passed as junior and leading scorer Martinez tallied his six goal of the season. Andrews connected to Martinez after breaking up a pass from Salem Internationals goaltender. Martinez then struck after beating one Salem International defender to eventually score the game-winning goal.

Freshman Danny Deakin continued the offensive attack after he was given a direct kick opportunity from the right side of the penalty box at the 74:21 mark into the match. Deakin registered his fourth goal of the season after drilling the ball into the top left corner of the net and extended the lead by two.

Martinez completed the scoring, notching his seventh of the season and second of the night to complete the 4-1 win. Deakin and sophomore Kevin Barry were awarded the assists at the 88:42 mark.

The Lakers outshot Salem International 21 to 12 throughout the entire match. Mercyhurst has now outshot every opponent they have faced thus far this season.

Senior Mikko Sarkkinen captured his fourth win of the season to improve to 4-2-0 while net minding for Mercyhurst. Sarkkinen allowed one goal in four shot on net throughout the entire 90:00 minutes. The Tigers Johannes Merz (1-1-0) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four goals on 11 shots faced.

The Lakers head to the University of District Columbia on Monday, September 23 for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Last season, Mercyhurst suffered a 1-0 loss over the Firebirds and look to take back a victory.
