MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis got its 2013-14 season off to a strong start on Wednesday afternoon with a decisive 8-1 victory at Allegheny. The Gators suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1.

Mercyhurst won two out of three doubles matches to get the afternoon going. Senior Caroline Bristol teamed up with junior Sarah Baich to earn an 8-1 victory over Allegheny's Sun Mo Koo and Andrea Brush. Bristol and Baich earned All-PSAC First Team honors a year ago. Then, after the hosts earned their only victory of the day, the Laker duo of junior Katelyn Caniford and sophomore Devon Hubbard held off Allegheny's Kathleen McBride and Haley Meekhof, 8-6 at #3 doubles.

The Lakers swept all six matches in singles action, winning every set over the Gators. Bristol defeated Tiffany Kollah, 6-4 and 6-2, followed by senior Courtney Thompson's 6-1, 6-1 win over Sun Mo Koo. Sarah Baich won 6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles. Her younger sister, freshman Annie Baich, earned her first collegiate victory at #4 by the scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Junior Taylor Wedlake and Caniford finished off the singles' sweep at #5 and #6 respectively.

Mercyhurst will get back into tournament action when it travels to the University of Charleston for the ITA Championships, which are scheduled to take place from Saturday, September 21 through Monday, September 23.
