#1 Men's Lacrosse Hammers Wheeling in ECAC Semifinal Friday

ERIE, Pa.- The #1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team beat Wheeling Jesuit, 14-3, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament Semifinal Friday. Jake McAndrew and Brady Heseltine each scored four goals in the win at Tullio Field. The Lakers advanced to the ECAC Tournament Championship on Sunday, May 5.
 
Mercyhurst came out ready to play Friday morning, taking an early lead and controlling the action from there. McAndrew scored at the 10:49 mark and then James Chayka made it 2-0 with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter. McAndrew found the back of the net again a few minutes later, giving the hosts a 3-0 margin after one period.
 
Chayka scored 1:26 into the second frame before Wheeling finally got on the board. Brian Scheetz finished a Zac Reid assist with 10:41 to play, making it 5-1 Lakers. The Cardinals scored again, but Chayka hit Reid for a goal with 1:32 left, putting Mercyhurst ahead, 6-2, at halftime.
 
Heseltine got in on the action early in the second half, scoring at the 13:45 mark off a Scheetz pass. McAndrew followed with two goals for a 9-2 advantage. Scheetz continued his assist binge, finding Deven Alves for a score at the 4:44 mark. Less than a minute later, Scheetz hit Heseltine, who finished again. After a Wheeling goal, Heseltine scored twice more, including a highlight-reel goal over his shoulder late in the third. Cory Becker capped the scoring midway through the fourth quarter.
 
McAndrew and Heseltine each had four goals, while Scheetz totaled a goal and five assists. Chayka recorded two goals and a helper, while Reid had a goal and an assist. Michael Grace had a strong day in goal, making nine saves.
 
The Lakers outshot Wheeling, 40-29, and won 13-20 faceoffs in the match.
 
Wheeling closed its season with an 11-6 record.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 15-0 and will now play Lake Erie. The championship game is slated for a noon start on Sunday, May 5, at Tullio Field. For more on the ECAC Tournament, please click here.


Semifinal #2
Lake Erie 12, Seton Hill 10

ERIE, Pa.- The #10 Lake Erie College Storm men's lacrosse team beat #8 Seton Hill, 12-10, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament Semifinal Friday afternoon. Keegan Bal led the Storm with three goals and two assists as LEC stated its case to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
 
The teams played end-to-end throughout the day, pulling off several spectacular goals. The match was tied at 4 after a quarter, and then Lake Erie scored twice in the second frame to take a 6-5 halftime edge.
 
The Griffins rallied in the third period, scoring the first two goals of the half to take a 7-6 lead. The Storm answered with three straight goals to regain the lead. After an SHU goal, Bal scored late in the third for a 10-8 margin.
 
James Delaney and Zach Hartman scored in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 10 with 8:24 remaining. Reagan Harding's one-handed goal 24 seconds later gave LEC a one-goal edge. The Storm was able to hold off a late Griffin charge and Josh Becker scored on an empty net with 25 seconds to go, sealing the Storm's trip to the conference finals.
 
Bal totaled five points, while Harding had three goals and an assist. Macgregor Johnston, Trevor Tarte, and Becker each scored twice. Matt Delmonico paced Seton Hill with three goals and three assists.
 
Lake Erie improved to 12-3 this year, while SHU dropped to 12-3. LEC will now face Mercyhurst on Sunday, May 5, at noon in the ECAC Championship.
