QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – Despite a solo homerun by sophomore
Shaina Bunker in the top of the fifth, the Lakers fell to Gannon University 14-2 in five innings in day two of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament. It was the the Lakers' second loss of the tournament as they finished their season 20-30 overall and second in the PSAC West with a record of 7-9.
The Laker defense struggled in the first inning, allowing Gannon to score seven times, with only one of the runs being earned. The Golden Knights collected five hits and three walks in the frame, but two errors proved to be costly and Mercyhurst was never able to recover.
Mercyhurst dented the scoreboard in the top of the second with help from juniors
Megan Smith and
Kayleigh Milliman, and freshman
Taylor Jezuit. Both Smith and Milliman drew walks. Jezuit then bunted for a base hit, coupled with a throwing error That allowed both Milliman and Smith extra bases with Smith crossing the dish.
Gannon scored twice more in the bottom half of the second and then erupted for five more runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits to take a 14-1 lead.
Bunker homered with two outs in the fifth. The Lakers then drew a pair of walks but Jezuit popped out to short to end the contest.
Sophomore
Annie Truelove (8-10) started the game and later re-entered in the bottom of the fourth. Truelove gave up four hits, seven runs and recorded one strikeout. Senior
Megan Hopton pitched three complete innings, allowing nine hits, seven runs and four walks.
