QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team fell to Kutztown University 4-1 in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs at Veterans Park. The Lakers fall to 20-28 overall this season. Kutztown remains in the winning bracket with a record of 26-21.
Kutztown had chance to grab the lead in the bottom of the second, but an interference call on a Golden Bear runner heading home denied the run and kept the game scoreless.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. Senior
Kristen Fyffe drew a walk, the first baserunner of any kind allowed by KU's pitcher. After being bunted to second by freshman

Julie Harmon knocked in Fyffe with a single to left center, her 10th RBI of the season.
But the Golden Bears retaliated in the bottom of the sixth to take away the Mercyhurst edge. Kutztown loaded the bags on a double and a pair of walks. Nicole Henninger homered to clear the bases and give her team a 4-1 advantage.
The Lakers loaded the bases themselves in the seventh with one out, but Kutztown escaped, getting a fly ball and an infield grounder.
The Lakers will compete against the winner of Gannon/ Lock Haven who will compete at 4:00 p.m. Mercyhurst falls to the loser bracket and will play their second game at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 2 at Veterans Park.
