MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team dropped two to Mansfield University at Lutes Field on Saturday. The Lakers were shutout 11-0 in game one and fell 11-1 in the nightcap. Mercyhurst is now 10-18 on the season and remains 1-3 in the PSAC West. Mansfield improved to 14-8 overall and is 3-1 in the PSAC central.
In game one, the Lakers totaled four hits, but the Mansfield defense protected the dish to allow no runs in five innings. Mansfield scored a combined seven runs in the first two innings. Mansfield's Megan Miller and Ashley Inman chipped in with homeruns.
Senior
Megan Hopton (6-9) got the loss on the mound for Mercyhurst. In 1.2 innings pitched, she allowed six hits, six runs and had one strikeout. Sophomore
Annie Truelove came on in relief, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and recording three strikeouts.
Mercyhurst battled back in game two, trailing only 1-0 before scoring the equalizer in the third inning. Senior
Kristen Fyffe started off the inning with a single to the left. Fyffe advanced to third on a Mansfield error. Junior
Courtney Smith then drove in Fyffe.
Mansfield scored eight runs inning in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away. Kate Pratt's three run homerun ended the game.
Mercyhurst freshman
Chelsea Calabro pitched the entire 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits, eleven runs and two walks. Calabro is now 0-3 in the season.
Mercyhurst will play non-conference contests Monday at Ursuline College. The double-header is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
