ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University Softball team lost twice to Millersville University in a cross-over double header at the Mercyhurst Softball Field on Sunday. Millersville swept Mercyhurst by scores of 7-2 and 2-0. The Lakers fell to 18-23 in the season. Millersville improved to 28-16.
In game one, Mercyhurst took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior
Molly McNamara reached on a Marauders' error. Junior
Courtney Smith drew a walk before sophomore
Shaina Bunker hit a line drive to left to score both McNamara and Smith.
The Marauders cut the lead in half in their next at bat. Stephanie Kulp doubled to right field and advanced to third on a bunt single by Ginely Ortiz-Marrero. Kulp got picked off by catcher
Taylor Jezuit, but Ortiz-Marrero stole second and scored on a hit up the middle by Danielle DiFilippo.
Millersville struck for a combined six more runs in the sixth and the seventh to capture the 7-2 win. Kulp smacked a three-run homerun to contribute to the Marauders offense.
Senior
Megan Hopton (11-11) took the loss on the mound for the Lakers. She pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 13 hits and five runs. She totaled three strikeouts. Freshman
Chelsea Calabro made an appearance in the seventh, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
In game two, the Lakers wasted a fine performance by sophomore
Annie Truelove. Truelove, 6-7, pitched all the way, surrendering five hits She had three strikeouts.
Mercyhurst was held to two hits in the nightcap. Both came from senior left fielder
Amanda Walker, who finished 2-for-3.
Millersville scored a run in the first inning on doubles by DiFilippo and Jamie Motsko.
Millersville pushed across its final run in the sixth. DiFilippo singled, Berry doubled, and Motsko drive in the run.
The Lakers will host California (Pa.) on Tuesday, April 23 at the Mercyhurst Softball Field for a PSAC West doubleheader. The Lakers split with the Vulcans earlier in the season. The twinbill starts at 2:30 p.m.
