LORETTO, Pa. - The Mercyhurst softball team traveled down Pennsylvania today for the first game of a series at Saint Francis. Last season, the Red Flash swept the Lakers and held them to very few runs. Today, MU ran rampant. They put up six runs in the first inning and were leading 10-0 after the top of the fourth. SFU tried to come back, but the Lakers were relentless and won, 16-5. They scored five home runs throughout the afternoon. This is the most since at least 2012 and possibly in program history. Also, their 16 runs were the most since they dropped 16 on UPJ in 2024.
Mercyhurst (5-20, 4-6 NEC) seized control early scoring six runs in the first inning.
Karlie Kasten singled and later scored on a triple to right field by
Bailey Cannon. Cannon was then brought home by
Braylynn Kelly. Kelly later scored as
Gabriella DeLuca hit a two-run home run to make it five.
Ava Zubovic stepped up to the plate in the next at bat and smashed a solo home run. The Lakers led 6-0 after the first inning.
Saint Francis (2-30-1, 2-8 NEC) could not do anything in their half of the inning and had dug themselves a hole. The scoring continued in the second inning when
Jazlynn Sanders hit a three-run homer, bringing in Kelly and Cannon. Cannon continued to hold up her end of the bargain from the circle, all while recording hits and runs from the batter's box.
In the fourth frame,
Emelie Pascual scored on a wild pitch, right before the Red Flash managed three runs of their own. The score was now 10-3.
The fifth stanza saw another offensive surge from the Lakers, starting with a three-run homer by Pascual. Kelly doubled, and then Sanders hit her second home run of the game, bringing in two more runs and breaking a career-high of five RBIs in one game. The commentator described her perfectly. He said, "Her home run traveled at the speed of light" which was clear based on the rapid exit velocity. By the end of the top half of the inning, the Lakers led 16-3 and had surely put the game to rest.
SFU hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth but could not score any additional runs. Mercyhurst recorded their first-ever Division I win in five innings, 16-5.
The two sides will finish the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
