ERIE, Pa. –  The Mercyhurst University softball team dropped a doubleheader at No. 20 Gannon University in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contests this season.  The Lakers fell  2-1 in game one before bowing 11-5 in game two.

Mercyhurst dropped to 9-13 overall this season and is 0-2 in the PSAC.  Gannon improved to 4-0 in the PSAC and 17-2 overall.

The two games were the first meetings since Mercyhurst eliminated Gannon in the PSAC tournament last April.   The Lakers and Golden Knights had split their last ten contests.

Game one did not disappoint as the contest was scoreless until the top of the fifth.  Freshman Allison Yule drove in junior Kayleigh Milliman with a single up the middle.  Milliman reached second earlier in the inning after drawing a leadoff walk and advancing on senior Kristin Fyffe's sacrifice bunt.

The Lakers held their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh when Gannon's senior Samantha Scott hit a two-run walk-off homerun for the win.

Senior Megan Hopton took the loss for Mercyhurst.  In 6.1 innings pitched, Hopton allowed seven hits, two runs and recorded three strikeouts.  She is now 5-6 overall this season and 0-1 in the PSAC.

Senior Megan Dragon pitched all seven innings for the Golden Knights.  She improved to 9-1 this season, recording seven strikeouts, two walks and allowing only four hits.

Mercyhurst got off to a quick start in game two. Yule singled to lead off.  With two outs and Yule on second, junior Courtney Smith singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw.  Sophomore Shaina Bunker then singled to center field for the lead.

Gannon responded quickly with three runs in the last of the first.  Alexa Archambeault hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Laker lead to one.  Gannon's Alyssa Bates hit a single to score two more runs to give Gannon the lead.

In the bottom of the second, Gannon put four more runs on the board.  The biggest hit of the inning came from Scott who blasted her second homerun of the day to drive in three runs.

Mercyhurst fought back in its next at bat, again with Yule starting the rally with a single.  Courtney Smith eventually drove in Yule.  Sophomore Shaina Bunker and Milliman also had RBIs in the inning.

Gannon would respond in the bottom of the fourth with four more runs to seal the Golden Knights sweep.  Archambeault  registered her third straight RBI for the Golden Knights.  Scott would complete the scoring with a two-run double.

Junior Colleen Griffin (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Mercyhurst.  She pitched one inning and allowed three runs on three hits.  Sophomore Annie Truelove, freshman Chelsea Calabro and Hopton also saw action on the mound for the Lakers.

The Lakers are back in PSAC action tomorrow, April 3 at California (Pa.).  The doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m.
