Harmon Leads Softball in Sweep Over Gannon Thursday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ERIE, Pa. – Senior Julie Harmon went 5-for-6 with six RBIs to lead the Mercyhurst University softball team to a sweep over Gannon University on Thursday afternoon.  In game one, Harmon hit a three-run homerun in the sixth and then drove home the winning run on a seventh inning bunt single.

With the two wins, the Lakers improved to 18-22 in the season and 6-7 in the PSAC West.  Gannon, who was receiving votes nationally, fell to 19-8-0 and 4-6 in the PSAC.

Freshman Allison Yule started off game one with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.  The Lakers retired three straight Gannon batters in the first two innings.

Junior Kayliegh Milliman started the third inning with a one-out double to right center.  Senior Kristin Fyffe then singled to left field to advance Milliman to third. She would score later in the inning on a throwing error by the catcher.  Sophomore Becky Malaga drove in the second run of the inning with a single that plated Fyffe.  Yule drve in a third run later in the frame.

Gannon narrowed the scoring gap by two when Samantha Scott hit a two run homerun with two outs in the top of the third.  The Knights then tallied solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 4.

The Knights took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth with two unearned runs.  Scott collected her third RBI of the game during the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Harmon regained the lead for Mercyhurst when she hit a three-run homerun, her first roundtripper of the season.  But Gannon knotted the game again in the top of the seventh when Alyssa Bates hit one out with the bases empty. That set the stage for Harmon's heroics.  With two outs and runners on first and third, Harmon bunted the ball slowly towards the mound. Junior Megan Smith beat the throw home to end the contest.

Senior Megan Hopton (11-10) pitched the entire 7 innings for the Lakers.  Hopton gave up nine hits, seven runs and had one strikeout.

In game two, Mercyhurst outhit Gannon 11 to 6 to sweep the twinbill.  Sophomore Annie Truelove (6-6) got the win,  allowing two earned runs. She walked three and surrendered six hits.

Gannon was the first to score in the second game as Alexa Archambeault doubled home Rachel deGuia, who reached base on an error.  Gannon kept the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third.

Harmon got her fifth RBI of the day on a clutch single up the middle.  Fyffe, who singled herself earlier in the inning, scored the tying run.

Sophomore Courtney Smith then led off the bottom of the fourth with a homerun to ignite a six-run inning.  Fyffe, Harmon, Yule and freshman Taylor Jezuit all hit RBI singles.  Courtney Smith finished the scoring with her second RBI of the inning, a single to right field scoring Harmon.

Bates hit her second homerun of the day in the top of the fifth, and Gannon added another run in the top of the sixth, but could get no closer.

With the two wins, the Lakers split the season series with Gannon, with each team sweeping a doubleheader on its field.

Mercyhurst will host Millersville at the Mercyhurst Softball Field on Saturday, April 20.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
