EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team split with Edinboro University on Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers won a 2-1 battle before falling 8-3 over the Fighting Scots. Mercyhurst is now 16-21 in the season, and 3-6 in the PSAC western division. Edinboro is 5-15 overall and is now 2-3 in the PSAC.
In game one, both team tallied a run during the second inning of play. Junior
Megan Smith hit her eighth double of the season to lead off the top of the second. Senior
Kristen Fyffe grounded to short-stop. When Smith tried for third after the throw, Edinboro's first baseman Ashley Black overthrew the bag, allowing Smith to cross the dish.
Edinboro answered back quickly with the equalizer in the bottom of the second. The Fighting Scots' Stephanie Cassidy doubled to left. Kari Falk then singled to right to plate Cassidy. Falk, however was caught stealing by freshman
Taylor Jezuit to thwart the rally.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Lakers scored the go ahead run.
Megan Smith and junior
Kayleigh Milliman both reached base via a single and walk respectively. Fyffe then drove a pitch from Amanda Shields to right center field to score Smith.
Senior
Megan Hopton captured her tenth win of the season after pitching the entire seven innings of the game. Hopton (10-10) allowed six hits for one run and recorded four strikeouts.
In game two, Edinboro scored the first five runs of the contest before the Lakers retaliated. In the first inning, Pullo tripled to leadoff the Edinboro first. Black drove her in with a sacrifice fly. Edinboro then scored four times in the third. Falk, Kylie Mason, and Alex Baer drove in the runs.
The Lakers scored a run in the fourth inning on two walks and a wild pitch, leading to an RBI by
Megan Smith. Edinboro, however, scored twice in the bottom of the inning, with Black knocking in both runs with a single up the middle.
The Lakers scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Edinboro lead was too much to overcome. Sophomore
Annie Truelove suffered the second-game loss, throwing one inning. Truelove allowed two hits and a run while facing four batters. Freshman
Chelsea Calabro, sophomore
Colleen Griffin and Hopton followed in relief.
Mercyhurst will host Gannon University tomorrow, April 18, at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
