Wheeling, W.Va. – The Mercyhurst Softball team split a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit University Sunday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit beat the Lakers 3-2 in extra innings before Mercyhurst battled to a 9-7 win in game two. After the split, Mercyhurst is 9-10 this season.
Mercyhurst put a run on the board in the top of the first inning. Sophomore
Shaina Bunker singled to right field with a runner in scoring position for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wheeling Jesuit's Erika Jusko hit a solo homerun to tie the score and force the game into extra innings.
The Lakers took the lead int the top of the eighth. With two outs sophomore Rebecca Malaga put the ball in play and drew a Cardinal error. Senior
Molly McNamara scored the run after starting at second as part of the international tiebreaker.
The Cardinals won the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run hit by Rachel Conrad.
Senior
Megan Hopton took the loss to drop to 11-9 on the season. She allowed one walk, two strikeouts, five hits, and all three runs in 7.2 innings of work.
In game two, each team had eleven hits, but Mercyhurst used a six-run second inning to record the win. Malaga drove in the first run, while junior
Megan Smith hit her first triple of the season to clear the bases. Senior
Amanda Walker and freshman
Allison Yule also singled in the big inning.
Sophomore
Annie Truelove improved to 3-3 this season after pitching three complete innings. Truelove allowed four hits, two walks and one strikeout. Freshman
Chelsea Calabro pitched four innings, allowing three runs while registering one walk and three strikeouts.
The Lakers entertain Gannon University on March 29 at the Mercyhurst Softball field. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
