Softball Beats Davis & Elkins in Two Out Rally

SALEM, Va. – The Mercyhurst University Softball team beat Davis & Elkins College 5-3 in the opening contest of the Salem, Virginia tournament.  The Lakers improved to 6-9-0 in the season.  Davis and Elkins fall to 6-5-0 in their early season.
 
With the teams sixth win this season, Head Coach Sara Headley has captured her 200th career win while coaching at Mercyhurst.  Headley became the all-time winningest coach at Mercyhurst back in 2008, as well as her 100th win.  Headley has an overall coaching record of 200-227-1 in her tenth season at Mercyhurst.
 
Despite being out-hit, the Lakers mustered five runs on six hits, including a seventh inning rally to pull away their sixth win of the season.  Davis & Elkins scored early in the contest, taking a two run lead in the third period. 
 
The Lakers came back to tie the contest in the fifth at 2.  Junior Kayleigh Milliman led off with a single, followed by senior Kristen Fyffe who drew an error to advance Milliman.  Freshman Taylor Jezuit drew a walk to load the bases for freshman Allison Yule to hit a sacrifice fly to split the Davis & Elkins lead.  The next play, senior Molly McNamara drove in the equalizer.
 
At the top of the seventh, Mercyhurst had a two-out rally to score three runs.  Fyffe singled earlier in the inning for Yule to drive in her second RBI of the contest to take the lead. 
 
McNamara drew a walk to give the Lakers two runners on base with two outs.  Sophomore Megan Smith doubled to drive in two RBIs and complete the 3 run inning. 
 
Davis & Elkins Mallory Wishard tallied a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh but freshman Chelsea Calabro picked up the save, allowing only one hit on four batters faced.
 
Senior Megan Hopton pitched six innings and picked up her fifth win to improve to 5-4 this season.  She allowed nine hits, two strikeouts and two runs.
 
The Lakers compete against Shepherd University at Salem, Virginia at 9:00 a.m. followed by West Liberty at 3:00 p.m.
