EDINBORO, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team lost, 71-59, at Edinboro Wednesday night. The teams will meet again on Saturday in a first-round Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament game at McComb Fieldhouse.
Edinboro's first five made shots were three-pointers and the Fighting Scots hit eight treys on the night. Mercyhurst connected on just 4-25 three-point attempts in the loss.
The opponents will now look ahead to Saturday. The Scots earned home-court advantage with a season sweep of the Lakers. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and the winner will take on PSAC Western Division regular season champion Indiana (Pa.) in a tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 5.
In the regular season finale, Edinboro hit five treys to start the game, with Isaiah Prince and Johnathan Logan each making two to give the hosts a 15-6 lead after 7:50 of action. A Boro layup extended the margin to 11 before
Paul Bilbo converted a jumper. After two Scot foul shots,
Luis Leao and
Andy Hoying each made layups. Bilbo's bucket from Leao made it 19-14 with 6:54 left in the first half.
Edinboro quickly made sure its lead got no smaller, as Xavier Churnac made two free throws and a jumper. Churnac then assisted on a Prince dunk for a 25-14 advantage.
Callon Dailey drained a triple, but Bryan Theriot scored twice to balloon the lead back to double-digits. An Alex Moore basket in the final minute gave the Scots a 25-20 lead at the break.
The Lakers never let things get out hand, but also could not put together a run to get back into the game. Leao made a layup and then Dailey hit a three to pull within 10 at the 15:19 mark, but Moore answered with a trey and then Prince finished a three-point play to go up 16. Two Theriot foul shots made it an 18-point difference, but Dailey came back with a three-point play and then
Jonathan Ouegnin dunked with 12:30 to play.
Bilbo took over offensive glass, making a layup while being fouled. He grabbed his own miss and eventually Leao scored inside. On the next trip down, Bilbo grabbed the board and then split a pair of free throws with 10:38 remaining. The junior followed with another offensive rebound and a putback to get the visitors within 52-41.
Leao made a three-point play and then a layup, but Logan made two foul shots on the other end. The teams traded buckets for several minutes, but Mercyhurst could not dent the Scot margin. A Logan trey with 4:21 left made it 65-52.
Dailey finished with 17 points, while Leao had 15 points and nine boards. Bilbo added nine points and five rebounds. Prince paced Edinboro with 23 points, while Theriot posted 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lakers connected on 26-63 field goals (41 percent) and Edinboro hit 24-51 (47 percent) tries. The Scots held a 28-22 advantage in rebounds. They also converted 15-16 free throws, while Mercyhurst attempted just five from the line.
Coach
Gary Manchel's squad wrapped up the regular season with a 16-12 record, including a 12-10 PSAC mark. Edinboro is 17-9 overall and 13-9 in the league.
