WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team kicked off its spring campaign by picking up right where it left off last autumn, prevailing 9-0 over the Bluefield State Big Blues. The fourth-straight shutout win improved the Lakers' season record to 6-0.
Mercyhurst delivered two perfects in singles play as
Sarah Baich and
Taylor Wedlake each turned in 6-0, 6-0 performances in the No. 4 and No. 5 match. Bluefield's
Marijana Gjorgievska gave the Lakers a fight in the No. 2 match, yet Courtney Thompson outlasted her opponent 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Meanwhile, Thompson teamed up with Rebecca Haener to give Mercyhurst its lone shutout win in doubles play, emerging with an 8-0 triumph.
The Lakers' Southern Tour will continue tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they travel to Athens, W. Va. to take on the Mountain Lions of Concord University.
