Men's Basketball Travels to Clarion Wednesday Night

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team travels to Clarion on Wednesday, February 13, for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. The contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Tippin Gymnasium.

The Lakers enter Wednesday on a three-game winning streak. They rallied for an 18-point deficit to take down Slippery Rock, 60-57, on February 9. Mercyhurst converted 30-36 free throws as Luis Leao made 15-20 alone. Leao finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jean Onana added 14 points in his second career start. Jonathan Ouegnin contributed 12 points, seven assists, and five boards on his way to being named PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Week. Onana was chosen West Freshman of the Week.
 
Clarion has dropped five in a row, including a 65-54 loss to Indiana (Pa.) on February 9. Mike Kromka led with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Corey Bellovich posted 14 points.
 
Mercyhurst clinched a PSAC Tournament spot with the win over The Rock. It is 10-7 in the conference, even with Edinboro for fourth place. Clarion is tied with Lock Haven for seventh place at 3-14. Clarion needs to win out in its final five games and get help to move into the top six of the Western Division.
 
Leao is averaging 19.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Ouegnin is posting 9 points, 4.1 boards, 4 assists, and 2.1 steals per outing. The Paris, France, native is shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 83.1 percent from the foul line. Onana has come on in the last three games, averaging 14 points per game on 52 percent field goal shooting.
 
Kromka leads a balanced Eagle offense with 12.6 points and 9.1 boards per outing. Marques Jones, Leonard Patterson, Calvin Edwards, and Aaron Johnson each score between 8.9 and 9.8 points per game.
 
The Lakers are fourth nationally in free throw shooting, hitting 77.4 percent from the line. They also rank 15th in the country, allowing 61 points per game.
 
Mercyhurst took a 62-49 decision from Clarion on January 16. The contest was even at 49 before the Lakers held the visitors scoreless in the final 6:13 of the second half, pulling away for the victory. Leao had 15 points and 10 boards.
