ROCHESTER, N.Y.- Three goals propelled the tenth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team over the Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers improved to 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the College Hockey America conference. Mercyhurst forced RIT's first conference loss of the season as they fell to 8-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the CHA.
The Tigers took away the 1-0 lead in beginning of the first period to continue of from Friday afternoons showing. Dakota Waites scored her first goal of the season after an squeezing the puck past Mercyhurst goaltender Julia DiTondo on an odd man rush at 5:37 into the first period.
RIT had the 1-0 edge after the first but Mercyhurst controlled most of the first after outshooting the Tigers 12 to seven.
Mercyhurst scored the equalizer halfway through the middle period after sophomore Caroline Luczak scored her first goal of the season. Sophomore Emily Janiga and senior Christine Bestland tallied the assists.
The Lakers continued on with the offensive pressure as it payed off just two minutes after the first goal. Janiga collected a two points game after scoring her seventh goal of the season.
Her goal gave Mercyhurst the 2-1 lead heading into the final period, with the Lakers controlling the majority of the middle period. Throughout the second period, Mercyhurst outshot RIT by a 17 to 7 margin.
Just one minute into the third, RIT answered back to tie the contest at two. Kolbee McCrea tallied her first goal of the contest and third against Mercyhurst throughout the series. Kourtney Kunichika added her second assist of the night.
Sophomore Lauren Kilroy shot a blast to score her first goal collegiate goal at the 6:45 mark past RIT goaltender Ali Binnington. Kilroy's first career goal marked the game-winning goal of the game. Junior Shelby Bram and sophomore Jenna Dingledein assisted in the even strength goal.
RIT pulled their goalie with 37 second left in regulation despite the Tigers efforts of killing off a Mercyhurst power-play. The Lakers held off the Tigers last minute rush to complete the weekend split.
All told, the Lakers outshot RIT 37 to 22 throughout the entire contest. Bestland led the team with eight shots on net while senior Christie Cicero attempted six while Janiga shot five.
Sophomore goaltender Julia DiTondo captured her first collegiate win while in goal for Mercyhurst. DiTondo made 20 saves on 22 shots in the entire 60:00 minutes. Binnington (8-4-1) suffered the loss after stopping 34 shots and allowing three goals.
The Lakers host St. Lawrence University in a weekday series before the Thanksgiving Holiday. The series will begin on Tuesday, November 26 and conclude on Wednesday, November 27. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
