ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's hockey team hosts Ohio State University in its home opener on Saturday, October 5. As part of the Mercyhurst Homecoming festivities, the out-of-conference match up will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Coming off of a weekend split against Minnesota State – Mankato (2-4; 3-2), the Lakers look to capture their seventh consecutive home-opener win dating back to 2006-07 season. During the 2005-06 season, the Lakers fell to Minnesota State – Mankato 2-0 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Senior captain Chrisitne Bestland tallied three points (1g, 2a) throughout the weekend, marking an eight game scoring streak dating back to last season. Freshman
Jillian Skinner tallied her first point as a Mercyhurst Laker with an assist during Friday's contest. Bestland, and Skinner captured their first College Hockey America Athletes of the Week with their performances.
Ohio State is opening its 2013-14 season at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Buckeyes finished their last season 19-15-3 and made an appearance at the WCHA playoffs. Eight players on Ohio States roster recorded at least 20 points last season, and 11 players had 16 or more points. Last season, Ohio State went 5-1-0 against non-conference opponents. The Buckeyes return 18 letterwinners including senior Ally Tarr who recorded 32 points to lead her team in scoring.
