ERIE, Pa. – Five different Lakers score as the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team shut-out Maine 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers picked up the second straight win and improved to 5-3-1 in the season. Maine fell to 0-5-1 overall.
The Lakers attempted a team high 60 shots against the Black Bears with 27 of them taken throughout the second period. The Black Bears attempted 23 shots on net throughout the contest.
Junior
Amanda Makela picked up her third shutout of the season and sixth of her career while making 23 saves against Maine. Makela improved to 5-3-1 while in net for the Lakers. Maine's Meghann Treacy (0-5-1) made 55 saves on 60 shots on net.
Sophomore
Jenna Dingeldein scored the game-winning goal at the 6:28 mark of the second period, marking her fifth goal of the season. Dingeldein's goal was scored after she crashed the net from an initial shot from senior
Christie Cicero. Sophomore
Kathy Donohue also added an assist.
The third period the Lakers offense ignited with four goals from four different players. Sophomore
Maggie Rothgery started the scoring at the 2:59 mark of the final period. Rothgery scored after a scramble in front of the Maine net with seniors
Kaleigh Chippy and
Christine Bestland starting that offensive rush.
Chippy then tallied a goal of her own this time led by Rothgery at the 9:02 mark. Donohue passed the puck through to Rothgery at the goalies crease. Rothgery then attempted a shot which was blocked to
Kaleigh Chippy who stuffed the puck up behind Treacy's glove, making the score 3-0.
Donohue scored just two minutes later to tally her first collegiate goal as a Mercyhurst Laker before sophomore
Emily Janiga completed the scoring at the 15:52. Sophomore
Jaclyn Arbour, Cicero and Bestland all added assists.
All told, the Lakers had eight different players tally at least one point throughout the contest. Donohue collected three points on a goal and two assists while Rothgery and Chippy added a goal and an assist a piece.
With the goal, Dingeldein is just two points from her career 50 while at Mercyhurst. Janiga is now just three points again from her career 50, while Chippy needs seven. Bestland needs 14 points her reach her career milestone of 200 points.
The Lakers return to action as the Lakers compete in their first conference game at Robert Morris University on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9. Puck drop will begin at 3:00 p.m. for both contests at the RMU Island Sport Complex.
