ERIE, Pa. – The fourteenth-ranked Mercyhurst University men's soccer team captured their sixth straight win in the 2-0 victory over Lock Haven University on Tuesday afternoon. The shutout also marked the Lakers fifth of the season as they improved to 11-3-0 overall and 9-1-0 in the PSAC.
With the win, the Lakers have clinched a PSAC playoff berth and continue the quest in defending the PSAC regular season title.
Lock Haven played mostly defense throughout the first half as the Lakers attempted 15 shots with six of them reaching the Lakers net. Mercyhurst continued to push the defensive line and goaltender Brad Sumski until junior
Fernando Martinez broke through at the 32nd minute of the first half.
Martinez received the ball after the Bald Eagles defense broke up a pass from the bottom right corner of the field. He then dribbled the ball into the middle of the penalty box before striking with his left foot to the top right corner of the goal.
Mercyhurst had a few more blank shots throughout the first half but Sumski denied the Lakers any more goals. The Lakers headed into the second half of the contest with a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Matt Campana struck at the 56:12 mark of the contest to give Mercyhurst the 2-0 edge. Junior
Ryan Lund moved from the defensive line to the offensive zone during a Lakers rush towards Lock Haven's net. Lund picked up a centering pass that was broken up by a Bald Eagles defenseman at the 14 yard line. Lund then redirected the back to Campana who was crashing towards the net. Campana easily passed the ball to the left corner of the net under Sumski.
Freshman
Nicholas Smith remains undefeated while in net for Mercyhurst with a perfect 5-0-0 record. Smith made two saves and captured his third shutout of the season. Sumski fell to 2-4-0 after making seven saves on nine shots faced.
Mercyhurst will host Urbana on Friday, October 25 at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Urbana is currently ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region with a record of 5-3-4 overall. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
