ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team was shutout 3-0 by 19th ranked California (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Lakers fell to 4-4-1 overall in the season and 3-4-1 in the PSAC. California picked up its sixth straight win, improving to 6-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the PSAC.
California (Pa.) tallied twice in the first half. A little more than 11 minutes into the game, the Vulcans' Jordan Gray created an offensive rush by a cross backwards to teammate Marissa Neifert. Neifert had one touch to Erin Hogan who scored her third goal of the season.
With less than two minutes before the half, California (Pa.) struck again off a corner kick. Vulcans' Stephanie Thompson sent a corner kick into traffic in front of the Lakers net. Nicole Mayers completed the play by heading the ball past Mercyhurst goaltender
Ellie McDougall.
California outshot Mercyhurst 18 to one in the first 45 minutes.
The Vulcans completed the scoring at the 86:13 minute of the match when Jordan Gray tallied her first goal of the season.
McDougall made ten saves in the game. She fell to 4-4-1 in the season.
Vulcans' goaltender Ashley Magruda picked up the win, stopping three shots. The Vulcans posted theit fifth straight shutout and haven't been scored on in the last 490 minutes
The Lakers travel to eleventh-ranked Slippery Rock University on Saturday, October 5. The contest will mark the fourth nationally ranked opponent that Mercyhurst has faced. Thus far, the Lakers are 2-1-0 against that caliber of opposition. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
