Men's Soccer Upsets #8 Slippery Rock 2-1

Junior Fernando Martinez scored a goal and added an assist to help Mercyhurst capture their fourth straight win.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's soccer team captured their fourth straight win after upsetting the eighth-ranked Slippery Rock, 2-1 Saturday evening.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 11-3-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock suffered their second loss of the season for an overall record of 10-2-1 and 5-2-0 in the PSAC.

Junior Fernando Martinez continued to be destructive from around 18 yards out as he tallied his eleventh goal of the season and gave Mercyhurst the 1-0 lead. Martinez's unassisted goal was shot from just inside the penalty box at the 12:07 mark.

Mercyhurst attacked the net again this time by freshman Jack Watson who marked his fourth goal at the 42:13 mark of the contest. Watson took a hard shot to the left of the net to give the Lakers a 2-0 advantage heading into the second half. Martinez was awarded the assist.

Slippery Rock answered back about ten minutes into the second half to cut the Mercyhurst edge in half. The Rock's Dom Francis sent a through pass to Stephen Donnelly for a breakaway attempt down the right wing. Donnelly tallied his sixth goal of the season after making a move past Lakers goaltender Mikko Sarkkinen and sent a pass into the back of the net.

The Lakers defense however allowed just two more shots on net throughout the rest of the second half to secure the win. Sarkkinen made three saves on four shots to improve to 7-3-0 in the season.

The Rock goaltender Chris Zier fell to 7-2 after allowing two goals on nine shots faced.

The Lakers return to the Mercyhurst Soccer Field as they host Lock Haven University on Tuesday, October 22. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
