ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team edged Seton Hill 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 6-5-1 in the season and 5-5-1 in the PSAC. Seton Hill fell to 4-9-0 overall and 2-9-0 in the PSAC.
The Lakers controlled the majority of the play early in the contest and were rewarded with two goals.
Sophomore
Nikki Charboneau tallied her first collegiate goal to give her team a 1-0 advantage. Freshman
Nicole McAlpin and
Kristina Roberti moved the ball through the Griffins' defense on the rush. Charboneau set herself at the six yard line in front of the Seton Hill net just in time for a back pass from Roberti. Charboneau finished to the top left corner of the net.
At the 18:56 mark, Roberti collected her first goal of the season and second of her career. Sophomore
Lauren Testa took a tiugh-angled shot from the left side and hit the post. Roberti was alone in front and scored on the rebound.
The Lakers outshot Seton Hill seven to three in the first 45 minutes.
Seton Hill played with more enthusiasm in the second half and outshot the Lakers 11 to seven. Madison Grourley broke through the Lakers defense at the 57:48 mark to cut the Mercyhurst lead into half.
Mercyhurst held off a last-minute rush by Seton Hill to record itssixth win of the season. Sophomore goaltender
Ellie McDougall made seven saves and allowed one goal to improve to 6-5-1. Seton Hill goaltender Bethany Winter made four saves and fell to 4-9-0.
The Lakers head to Malone for an out -of-conference contest on Wednesday, October 16. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
