Mason's Late Goal Propels Field Hockey to Win at IUP Saturday

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team won, 3-2, at IUP Saturday afternoon. Tracey Mason scored with under five minutes left to give the Lakers a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) road win.

Indiana tied the game at 2 at the 63:07 mark. Mercyhurst quickly responded, as it earned a penalty corner two minutes later. Mason eventually deflected in a loose ball to the top of the cage, making it 3-2.

The Crimson Hawks made the Lakers work to close out the contest. They earned four penalty corners and attempted six shots. Jess Wess recorded five saves in the final stretch, coming up big as Mercyhurst won its first conference game of the year.

IUP scored at the 12:54 mark and led 1-0 at halftime. In the second period, the Lakers got a penalty corner. Mason inserted to Meghan Smith, who fired in a shot from the top of the circle, tying the game at 1 apiece at the 48:34 mark.

In the 61st minute, Smith shot toward the IUP cage, where Kelsey Lovelace knocked in the ball for a 2-1 Laker edge. The hosts quickly answered, setting up Mason's game-winner.

Wess made 16 saves in goal. Indiana outshot the Lakers, 23-9, in the contest.

Mercyhurst improved to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC. It hosts Seton Hill in another conference match on Tuesday, October 15.
