ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team lost, 63-46, to #21 Edinboro Wednesday evening at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The teams combined for 56 turnovers in an ugly Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest.
The Lakers, looking to upset the Fighting Scots for the second straight season, hung around in the first half, as the teams threw the ball around the court recklessly. Edinboro committed 17 turnovers and Mercyhurst had 14 in the first twenty minutes of action.
The Scots went ahead 5-0 early before
Adrienne Kloecker hit a jumper with 16:09 left to get on the board. After a Darche' Jackson three-pointer,
Abby Allen answered with a trey of her own. With 12:50 to go,
Kaylee Foster converted a three-point play to even the score at 8. Edinboro would take a small margin shortly thereafter, but the hosts stayed close. A Foster hoop cut the deficit to one with 8:02 showing on the clock.
Kiara Brown's second triple of the game gave Edinboro some breathing room, but three Laker free throws closed the gap. A Hope Mancini bucket made it 29-21 and the Scots went into the locker room with a 30-21 advantage.
The visitors scored the first nine points of the second period, but Mercyhurst refused to go away. A
Dana Banda layup and an Allen trey got the Lakers going and then Foster scored a layup while being fouled to make it 43-32 with 10:31 remaining.
Alayna White caught Edinboro napping on the ensuing foul shot, collecting an easy rebound and lay-in to get within single digits. Two Scot buckets quickly stretched the lead back to 14, however.
A Bobbi Baker three made it 55-34 at the 5:19 mark before the Lakers rallied.
Lindsey Burke made a layup and a triple around a
Kelsey Trosch hoop to get within nine. Edinboro hit 5-7 free throws down the stretch to seal the road win.
Foster led the Lakers with 12 points and five rebounds. Kloecker added nine points. Brown paced the Scots with 25 points and Samantha Blazetic had 12 points, 11 boards, and four blocked shots.
Edinboro finished with 29 turnovers and Mercyhurst totaled 27. The Scots had a 29-17 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Lakers dropped to 5-13 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC. Edinboro is now 15-3 overall and 12-2 in league play.
Mercyhurst hosts California (Pa.) in another conference game on Saturday, February 2. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start at the MAC.
