Men's Hoops Heads to West-Leading Slippery Rock Saturday

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team travels to Slippery Rock for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest Saturday, January 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Morrow Field House.

The Lakers have an 11-5 overall record and a 7-3 PSAC mark. They beat Clarion, 62-49, on Wednesday. Mercyhurst trailed, 39-28, midway through the second half before ending the game on a 34-10 run. The Laker defense held Clarion scoreless in the last 6:13 of the contest. Jonathan Ouegnin had 16 points and four assists, while Luis Leao posted 15 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Slippery Rock is 11-3 this season, including an 8-2 conference record. It is tied with IUP for first place in the PSAC Western Division. The Rock won, 73-60, at Lock Haven Wednesday. Gerald Brooks totaled 24 points and 11 rebounds and Devin Taylor had 14 points and 18 boards. As a team, SRU outrebounded the Bald Eagles, 45-31, in the victory.
 
Leao paces Mercyhurst with 21.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He ranks second in the PSAC in scoring and 11th in rebounding. Leao is also seventh in field goal shooting (53.8 percent) and free throw percentage (84.0). Ouegnin is averaging 9.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game. The junior is shooting 60 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the foul line. He stands eighth in assists, fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio, and third in steals. As a team, the Lakers are second in free throw shooting (77.3 percent), third in field goal percentage (47.2), and fourth in three-point shooting (35.5) in the league.
 
The Rock feature four players scoring in double figures this season. Darious Clark is scoring 14.7 points per game, having hit 34 treys. He is fourth in made threes and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (33.6 percent). Taylor is putting up 14.6 points and 11.5 boards (second in the PSAC), while Tabari Perry is posting 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds. Gerald Brooks has joined the roster in the new year, recording 14.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in eight games. SRU leads the league in rebounding at 48.5 per game.
 
The teams met three times last season, with each team winning at home in the regular season. The Lakers won, 77-69, in a PSAC Tournament game to end the Rock's season.
