ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won twice in straight sets Saturday at the Mercyhurst Gannon Invitational. The Lakers beat West Virginia State and Lake Erie College to improve to 7-1 on the season.
Against Lake Erie, the Lakers won 25-15, 25-18, and 25-18.
Becky Leusch led with 10 kills, while
Camille Alvarez had seven.
Kiera Rebert had 22 assists as Coach
Ryan Patton played most of his bench in the contest. Defensively, Mercyhurst contained LEC to a .031 hitting on the day.
In the first match against West Virginia State, the Lakers took an early lead and never looked back, winning by scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-19.
Becky Smith and Leusch combined for 19 kills, while Rebert had 35 assists.
Elyse Texido recorded 20 digs.
The Lakers are 7-1 in 2012. It's the program's best start since 2007, when it began the season 13-1.
Mercyhurst travels to IUP next weekend for four more matches. It will take on West Virginia Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus on September 14 and then face Charleston and Seton Hill on September 15.
