Volleyball Wins Two Friday at Home Invitational

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won twice Friday night at the Mercyhurst Gannon Invitational. The Lakers swept Holy Family and then beat Ohio Dominican in four games to kick off the weekend event.
 
In the opener against Holy Family, the hosts wasted little time establishing themselves. They won 25-13 in the first game, followed by wins of 25-10 and 25-20 for the sweep. Becky Leusch led with 11 kills, while Kiera Rebert had 25 assists and seven digs. As a team, the Lakers hit .326 for the contest and limited the Tigers to a .012 hitting percentage.
 
Ohio Dominican won a four-set match against Holy Family in the middle contest of the evening.
 
Mercyhurst jumped to an eight-point victory in the first game against ODU. The Panthers bounced back with a 25-21 win to even the match. Coach Ryan Patton's squad took control from there, taking a competitive third game before rolling to an 11-point game four win to close it out.
 
Leusch totaled 12 kills. Amanda Balasko had 11 kills and 16 digs and Sarah Vick added 10 kills. Rebert had 37 assists, six aces, and seven digs. Elyse Texido collected 25 digs. The Lakers compiled 12 aces in the contest, as Nicole Texido had three on her own.
 
With the wins, Mercyhurst improves to 5-1 in 2012. ODU is 2-3 and Holy Family is 0-6 this year. This is the Lakers' best start to a campaign since 2007 when they began 12-1.
 
The Lakers continue action at the invite Saturday morning. They face West Virginia State at 10:35 a.m. and then Lake Erie College at 3:35 p.m. Lake Erie faces Holy Family in a neutral match at 1:05 p.m.
