ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The #10 ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team opened its season with a 6-2 win over RIT Friday night.  Four different Lakers got goals en route to the victory.

Mercyhurst wasted little time getting on the board when junior Christie Cicero, assisted by junior captain Christine Bestland, scored eight seconds into the contest.  Bestland scored ten seconds later as the lead swelled to 2-0 in the first 18 seconds.  Mercyhurst senior Jenna Hendrikx (8:13) and sophomore Molly Byrne (14:42) scored later in the period.  The Lakers would outshoot the Tigers 16-3 in the first twenty minutes.

Great passing from freshman Emily Janiga and Jenna Dingeldein helped sophomore Shelby Bram notch her first goal of the season four minutes into the second period.  The Lakers kept the pressure and Hendrikx scored a minute later, her second goal of the night.

Thirteen seconds later, RIT answered when freshman Carly Payerl scored her first goal of the season.  RIT freshman Katie Hubert  beat sophomore goaltender Amanda Makela later in the period, it was the only power play goal of the night. Her goal at the 19:33 reduced Mercyhurst's lead to 6-2 heading into the third period.
