ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The #10 ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team opened its season with a 6-2 win over RIT Friday night. Four different Lakers got goals en route to the victory.
Mercyhurst wasted little time getting on the board when junior
Christie Cicero, assisted by junior captain
Christine Bestland, scored eight seconds into the contest. Bestland scored ten seconds later as the lead swelled to 2-0 in the first 18 seconds. Mercyhurst senior

Molly Byrne (14:42) scored later in the period. The Lakers would outshoot the Tigers 16-3 in the first twenty minutes.

Shelby Bram notch her first goal of the season four minutes into the second period. The Lakers kept the pressure and Hendrikx scored a minute later, her second goal of the night.
Thirteen seconds later, RIT answered when freshman Carly Payerl scored her first goal of the season. RIT freshman Katie Hubert beat sophomore goaltender
Amanda Makela later in the period, it was the only power play goal of the night. Her goal at the 19:33 reduced Mercyhurst's lead to 6-2 heading into the third period.
Mercyhurst dominated RIT in shots, 35-23. The Lakers finished 0-7 with the player advantage, while RIT was 1-7.
Makela posted the second win of her career by making 21 saves in net. RIT junior goaltender Laura Chamberlain took the loss, making five saves. She was replaced by sophomore Ali Binnington early in the first period. She played the final 51:21 and made 24 saves.
The two teams will conclude the weekend series Saturday, September 29, at 2 pm.
