Field Hockey Can't Keep Early Lead in Loss to #4 IUP

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team fell, 4-2, to fourth-ranked Indiana (Pa.) Saturday afternoon. The Lakers went up 1-0 and 2-1 before the Crimson Hawks rallied for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division win.

Marissa Faso put the hosts up in the 29th minute, bringing the ball into the circle and beating IUP goalkeeper Brittany Varacello. Anouk Sickman answered for the Hawks shortly thereafter, sending the match to halftime tied at one. 

Faso inserted a penalty corner early in the second frame, hitting Kelley Hynes, who passed back to Faso. Faso then hit Meghan Smith in front of the net, where Smith deposited the ball into the back of the goal for a 2-1 edge. Again, IUP responded, evening the contest four minutes later.

Alicia Straining gave Indiana the lead for good in the 57th minute, rebounding a shot into the net. Kate Bruce finished the scoring with a putback of her own shot late in the match.

IUP outshot Mercyhurst , 17-3. Jess Wess made six saves in net for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while IUP moved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in league action.

The Lakers play at Shippensburg Tuesday, September 25, in another PSAC West game.
