Women's Soccer Out-Shoots the Mounties in 5-2 Victory

Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team came from behind to defeat Mansfield University, 5-2 on Wednesday.  Senior Sara Hawksworth had the game-winning goal at the 47:04 mark of the match.  The Lakers moved to a 4-3 overall record, and picked up their first conference win in four tries.
 
The Lakers were down early in the match.  Mounties freshman Kelsey Chapman recorded the first goal 20 minutes into the first half.  Junior midfielder Jessica Kerwin passed the ball to Chapman, who was challenged by Lakers freshman goaltender Ellie McDougall.  Chapman beat McDougall by lifting the ball over her head and into the top left corner of the goal, giving Mansfield a 1-0 lead.  A minute later, Mercyhurst committed a foul in the penalty box. Freshman Karyn Anselmo converted the shot, her second goal of the season, to give the Mounties a two goal lead.
 
The Mounties had control until later in the half when Mercyhurst freshman Nikki Charboneau directed the ball ahead to freshman Lauren Testa.  Testa beat Mounties goaltender Alexis Wilhelm, and drove the ball into the back of the net.  Before the end of the half, sophomore Janine Wong gave the ball to senior Sara Hawksworth who took one touch, then drilled the ball passed Wilhelm and into the high left corner, deadlocking the contest at 2-2.
 
The game-winning goal came from the Hawksworth-Wong duo two minutes into the second half.  The Lakers had a corner kick opportunity that was taken by Wong.  She sailed it through traffic and Hawksworth headed the ball cleanly into the top right corner, hitting two posts before touching net. 
 
Senior Olivia Resch scored again at the 67:55 mark with an assist from freshman Fawn Mulholland.  Resch capitalized from a corner kick that was sent into traffic.  Wong scored from Resch at 74:10 and finished the match with one goal and two assists. 
 
McDougall recorded the win, moving to 3-3 on the season.  She made two saves on four shots on goal.  Wilhelm played all 90:00 minutes for Mansfield and made eight saves on 13 shots on goal.  She moves to 1-4 while in net for the Mounties.
 
Mercyhurst dominated dominated in shot totaling 28 in the match, and had five corners.  Mansfield totaled seven shots and had only one corner kick.
 
The Lakers are on the road Saturday, September 22 at PSAC West rival Edinboro University. The Fighting Scots are 3-1 in conference play.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
