Softball Slides Past The Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team swept Slippery Rock University today, April 13 by scores of 4-0 and 7-2 respectively. Shaina Bunker led the way with two hits and three RBI's for the series.
 
The Lakers are now 23-20 on the season and 6-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play.  Slippery Rock falls to 13-14 overall this season and 2-8 in the PSAC West.
 
In game one, freshman Annie Truelove pitched a complete game shutout to help lead the Lakers past The Rock. Truelove gave up five hits while striking out four improving her record to 8-10 on the season.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after senior Samantha Eimers led off the game with a double down the left field line, Eimers then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Molly McNamara and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Shaina Bunker.

The Lakers would strike again in the top of the third inning using a leadoff single by junior Amanda Walker. Walker would move to second after Eimers drew a one out walk and then would score on an error by Slippery Rock pitcher Shaylee Ianno. Eimers would move to third and score on a Shaina Bunker groundout.

Mercyhurst would score one more in the fourth inning as sophmore Megan Smith scored on a Julie Harmon sacrifice fly. Truelove would shut down Slippery Rock the rest of the way allowing one hit in the final four frames.
 
In game two, the Lakers would strike first again in the top of the second off a Jen Bower solo homerun. The Rock came back to tie the game with a homerun of their own coming off the bat of third basemen Jenna Geibel. Slippery Rock would add another run in the bottom of the fourth to take the 2-1 lead.

Laker bats would wake up in the sixth inning however as they would score six runs off five hits. It all started with a lead off walk to Eimers. McNamara would then reach on an error sending Eimers to second. Bunker ended her big day with an RBI double to right field. Meghan Smith would follow Bunker with a double of her own scoring both McNamara and Bunker. After a pitching change, Andrea Sauers would single into left field advancing to second on the throw. With runners on second and third, Amanda Walker grounded out to second base scoring Meghan Smith. Courtney Smith then singled to left field plating Sauers. Lauren Rossi would bring in the final run on an RBI double to center field, but was thrown out trying for the triple.

The Lakers used solid performances from both Kristi Janoske and Megan Hopton in the circle today with Janoske recieving the start going three innings giving up three hits and two runs, Hopton would come in relief of Janoske in the fourth inning giving up five hits and no runs to get her fourth win of the year.
 
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow, April 14 when they take on cross-town rival Gannon University at home.  The first game of the twinbill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.  Fans that are unable to attend the doubleheader can follow along with live stats, which can be found by clicking here.
