Women's Hoops Comes Up Short in 61-59 OT Loss to Cedarville

Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team lost, 61-59 in overtime, to Cedarville (Ohio) Sunday night at the Tangerine Classic, hosted by Rollins College. Three Lakers scored in double figures in the loss.
 
In overtime, Cedarville opened the scoring with a free throw. Alayna White converted two free throws of her won, giving the Lakers a 56-55 lead with 3:27 left. The Yellow Jackets made a lay-in and then Kaylee Foster split a pair of shots from the foul line. Heidi Ansel scored to give Cedarville an edge. White made a layup on the other end, making it 59-59 with 46 seconds to play. Kayla Jenerette sank two free throws with 19 seconds showing on the clock. The Lakers had a look inside, but could not tie the score again.
 
Adrienne Kloecker hit a three to put the Lakers down 11-6 early on. After two Foster free throws, Taylor Krusinski sank a jumper to get Mercyhurst within three. It then went on a 10-0 run that saw Cedarville held without a field goal for 7:05. Foster scored and then Laura McCauley put in two lay-ins, giving the Lakers a 16-14 edge with 10:03 remaining. Dana Banda connected on two shots as Mercyhurst took a 20-14 lead. The Yellow Jackets finally scored, but Banda came back with a trey. Cedarville scored the last seven points of the half, tying the score at 23 going into the break.
 
In the second half, Banda made a layup and the Jackets hit a three-pointer. Banda answered with another triple, but Cedarville drained one of its own. Later in the period, Paris Thomas hit two free throws and a three, making it 43-39 Cedarville. Kloecker followed with a free throw and a trey, making it 43-all. After a Jacket hoop, Kelley McBroom converted with 6:45 to go.
 
After three Cedarville points, Kloecker responded with a trey and then Abby Allen connected on two shots from the foul line. White scored inside to expand the edge, but Becky Orchard hit a trey to get the Jackets within one with 2:21 left. White nailed a jump shot and then Cedarville made the tying three-pointer with 1:12 remaining. Both teams had potential go-ahead looks, but neither team could connect.
 
Kloecker and Banda each scored 12 points, while White added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Orchard had 15 points on five three-pointers for the Jackets. The Lakers outscored their opponents 24-10 in the paint. They had 15 points off turnovers to just three for Cedarville.
 
Mercyhurst is now 2-7 on the season. Cedarville improved to 8-4 in 2012-13. The Lakers host Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover Friday, January 4. The contest is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
