Women's Basketball Drops 68-53 at Millersville Wednesday

Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team lost, 68-53, at Millersville Wednesday evening. Kaylee Foster scored 18 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game at Pucillo Gymnasium. The contest saw both teams go on 35-8 runs.

For a second straight game, the Lakers struggled at the start. Millersville took an early 9-6 lead and then pulled away, scoring 15 points in a row before Alayna White's jumper got the visitors back on the board. The Marauders continued their pressure and eventually led 35-8 with 6:49 left in the first half.

The Lakers fought back with their own run, however, refusing to give up on the second night of a road back-to-back. White hit a three-pointer and Dana Banda followed with a layup to spark the spurt. A putback by Foster cut the deficit further. She hit two more lay-ins and then Laura McCauley scored in the final minute to make it 40-24. White capped the first-half scoring with a layup to make it a 16-point margin.

Mercyhurst continued its momentum in the second period, as Foster opened scoring with four straight points. After a Millersville three, Banda scored and then White nailed a trey to make it 43-35 with 16:38 remaining. Two Foster free throws got the Lakers closer and then Banda and White hit consecutive triples to even the score at 43 with 13:30 left. The hosts quickly regained the lead, going on a 12-1 burst. Mercyhurst could not recover from the late deficit.

Foster shot 6-8 from the floor and 6-9 from the foul line for 18 points. White scored 13 points and grabbed three steals. Laura McCauley contributed four points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench. Mashira Newman led Millersville with 11 points, seven boards, four assists, and three steals.

Mercyhurst dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC. Millersville is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Lakers take a week off for the holidays and then head to Florida for the Tangerine Classic at Rollins (Fla.) College. Mercyhurst will play #23 Rollins on Saturday, December 29, and then face Cedarville (Ohio) on Sunday, December 30.
