Field Hockey Rides Defense to 1-0 Win over #9 Slippery Rock

Box Score

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team beat #9 Slippery Rock, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division game Tuesday afternoon. Kelsey Lovelace scored the lone goal of the match midway through the first half.

Neither team could get much offense going in the first half, with the Rock trying two shots and Mercyhurst attempting one. The Lakers made their one shot count, however, as Kelsey Lovelace scored at the 14:40 mark for a 1-0 lead. Blair Pembleton beat her defender on the right side and then passed in front of Rock goalkeeper Courtney Lee, where Lovelace finished.

In the second half, Slippery Rock pressured the Laker defense throughout the period. The visitors controlled possession and peppered the net, but Jess Wess and the Mercyhurst back end held strong, stopping all five shots the Rock attempted.

Mercyhurst (5-9, 3-5 PSAC) travels to St. Charles, Missouri, for two non-conference contests this weekend. It faces Limestone October 13 and then takes on Lindenwood the following day.
