BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Mercyhurst senior
Molly Marsh netted two goals and freshman
Maire Dunning and
Kiley Cleveland each scored once to overpower Davis & Elkins, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The win helps the Lakers improve to 2-0-0 this season and marks the fifth time in the Lakers have beaten the Senators. The match was cut short due to inclement weather conditions with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
Marsh wasted no time in helping the Lakers gain an advantage over the Senators. The senior netted her first goal of the game just two minutes into the contest and then 13 minutes later cashed in her second goal providing the Lakers with an early 2-0 lead.
The Senators mounted their own offensive attack after Marsh's goals, shooting the ball five times in a 15 minute span. Senior goalkeeper
Rachel Griepsma saved one of the shots while the others missed their intended target.
Dunning gave the Lakers a 3-0 advantage after finding the back of the net at the 40:36 mark. Davis & Elkins wasted little time afterward to erase what had been a clean sheet for the Laker defense, netting its first goal off the foot of Luci Legaspi. With only 25 seconds remaining in the half, the Senators threatened again but Griepsma made a save to send the Lakers into the locker room with the 3-1 lead.
The Senators came out with a heavy offensive mind in the second half shooting the ball three times in the opening two minutes. The Senators' Cole Dant's header was blocked before hitting the crossbar with her very next shot. The Lakers persevered through the attack and made their own run down field in what led to Cleveland's netter at the 54:34 mark.
Davis & Elkins held the advantage in shots 19-12 and in corners 3-0. Griepsma made four saves in her second win of the season giving her a 2-0-0 record. Her counterpart Ashley Winkelspecht received the loss after making five saves.
The Lakers return to action on September 9 as they open up play at home against Kutztown University. Game time is set for a 4:30 p.m. start..
