FAIRMONT, W. Va.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team split two matches on its first day of 2011 action at the Fairmont State Falcon Fest. The Lakers defeated host Fairmont, 3-1. They lost to West Virginia Wesleyan in three sets.
 
Hurst beat the Falcons in four sets by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 27-29, and 25-20. Gretta Freyermuth recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Amanda Balasko had 11 kills and Becky Leusch and Becky Smith had 10 kills each.  Elyse Texido had 19 digs and four aces for the Lakers.
 
Mercyhurst opened its season by falling to Wesleyan, 3-0. The Bobcats won by scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-16. Texido led the team with 13 digs. Jessica Pattyn led the way for Wesleyan with 11 kills and 12 digs.
