Mercyhurst Volleyball Splits Two Crossover Matches Saturday Afternoon

Gretta Freyermuth had a double-double against Lock Haven Saturday.
ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team beat East Stroudsburg and lost to Lock Haven on the second day of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-West Crossover at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The split moved the Lakers' record to 7-6 in 2011.
 
Hurst defeated ESU in four sets to close out weekend action. It won 16-25, 25-15, 25-19, and 25-19.  After struggling in the opening set, the Lakers settled in and played stellar volleyball the rest of the way. They hit .393 as a team in the second frame on their way to hitting .203 for the match.
 
Gretta Freyermuth had 13 kills and Sarah Vick added 12. Kiera Rebert dished out 28 assists and Elyse Texido had 20 digs.
 
In the first contest of the day, Lock Haven and Mercyhurst played a largely even match. The Eagles took the victory by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-23. The Haven hit .229 in the match, while Hurst compiled a .227 hitting percentage.
 
Three Lakers had double-digit kills, as Becky Leusch led with 13. Vick had 12 and Freyermuth 11. Rebert totaled 27 assists and Texido recorded 23 digs. Freyermuth also had 13 digs for a double-double.
 
Mercyhurst went 2-2 in crossover action this weekend. They will face three more Eastern Division foes in October. Its next match is at Notre Dame College on Tuesday, September 20, at 7 p.m.
