Lakers Blank Mountaineers, 2-0

Sara Hawksworth tallied her first goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Mansfield
ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team blanked Mansfield University, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season. Senior Molly Marsh and junior Sara Hawksworth each tallied a goal in the win for the Lakers.

The loss dropped Mansfield to 1-2-0 on the season.

The Lakers came into the contest with a heavy offensive minded attack as they shot the ball 31 times while putting 14 on goal.  It took Hawksworth just under four minutes to mark her first goal of the season.  Freshman Kiley Cleveland registered the assist after putting her pass on target to Hawksworth, who snuck the ball past the Mountaineers keeper.

The Lakers took 14 shots after the first tally of the game but couldn't find the back of the net heading into the locker room.

The second half mirrored the first, as the Lakers continued putting on a shooting clinic.  Despite ripping 15 shots on goal, Mercyhurst could only capitalize once. The second half goal came off a free kick 35 yards out from the net.  Marsh stepped into the ball sending it over the head of Mansfield's goalkeeper, Alexis Wilhelm, for her third goal of the season.

The Lakers offense never let up throughout the contest but Wilhelm held the Lakers to just two goals on the afternoon. Mansfield's keeper made 14 saves including several saves on a Laker breakaway opportunities.  Lakers keeper, graduate student Rachel Griepsma, made two saves recording her third win of the season. Griepsma improved to 3-1-0 on the season, while Wilhelm suffered the loss to fall to 1-2-0.

Mercyhurst is back in action Wednesday, September 14 as they host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Clarion University in what will be its first conference matchup this season.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.  Live Stats will be available.
