Courtney Smith hit a two-run homer in game one while senior teammate
Michelle Schmitz hit a three-run shot in the second game to help the Mercyhurst College Lakers sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West foe, Edinboro University.
The Lakers took down the Fighting Scots 4-2 in the first game. C.Smith singled into right field to help the Lakers take the early 1-0 lead. Mercyhurst stuck again in the bottom of the second inning when Schmitz scored off of an
Andrea Sauers double. The Fighting Scots put a run on the board when leadoff hitter Marissa Pullo hit her second homer of the year. The Lakers wasted no time and C.Smith answered with a homer of her own driving in two runs. The freshman now represents five homeruns on the year.
Senior
Amanda Norman picked up her ninth win of the season after striking out five batters in five innings of work. Norman only gave up seven hits before giving way to freshman
Megan Smith. M.Smith picked up her first save of the season after throwing two shutout innings in the 4-2 win.
Mercyhurst jumped out of the gate in game two scoring three-runs off of a Schmitz homer. Senior
Kara Gorgos singled and C.Smith drew a walk to set up Schmitz three-run dinger. The Lakers went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the third inning including an
Emily Redig solo blast. The homer marks the juniors third of the season. Junior
Sydney Cuscino doubled in the sixth to set up a RBI single by Sauers to extend the Lakers lead, 7-3.
Sophomore
Megan Hopton cruised through four innings of work before Edinboro's Ashley Black hit a three-run homer. Hopton battled through the inning and pitched two more scoreless innings including a strong finish in the top of the seventh when she retired the side to end the game.
The Lakers now improve to 3-3 in the PSAC West Conference and progress to 17-14 overall this season. The Lakers are set to play Slippery Rock University tomorrow, April 4 at Slippery Rock, Pa. The Rock holds a 4-2 PSAC West Conference record while going 16-4 overall.
