CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College softball team faced the University of California (Pa.) in a conference battle that took place at Lilly Field in California, Pa. The Vulcans swept the doubleheader winning 10-4 in the first game before winning 6-5 in extra-innings during game two.
In the opening game the Vulcans scored eight runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run homerun. The Lakers plated three runs in the top half of the third inning off of a three-run homerun by sophomore
Julie Harmon, marking her third of the season.
Mercyhurst added one more run in the seventh but couldn't make up the difference as Hope Spancake of the Vulcans pitched six and one-third innings giving up four runs off of five hits. Spancake is now 8-2 on the season. The Lakers' junior
Amanda Norman pitched five and two-third innings giving up six runs off of six hits while freshman
Megan Smith receives the loss for the Lakers after pitching a third of an inning giving up four runs off of three hits.
Sophomore
Megan Hopton started in the pitching circle for the Lakers in game two. Hopton started out well pitching three shutout innings receiving support from her offense in the top half of the second inning. Harmon doubled down the right field line setting the Lakers up for a scoring opportunity. A few batters later
Michelle Schmitz drove a ball into right field to score Harmon from second base, providing the Lakers with the early 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst posted its second run of the game during the fifth inning when senior
Kara Gorgos led the inning off with a double into left center. Three batters later Harmon singled into center field scoring Gorgos from second to go up on the Vulcans, 2-0. California (Pa.) answered in the bottom of the inning off of a solo-homerun. The Vulcans kept the bats warm scoring three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up on the Lakers, 4-2.
The Lakers rally in the seventh would produce three runs jump started by Schmitz who started the inning off with a single down the right field line. Junior
Andrea Sauers ripped a single as well putting two Lakers aboard with one out. Junior
Emily Redig found a pitch to hit and singled into right field for an RBI. Gorgos then doubled to center field scoring both Redig and Sauers before being thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple. Mercyhurst went into the bottom of the seventh with a 5-4 lead.
Shelby Lia of the Vulcans led off the seventh with a homerun that would send the game into extra-innings. California (Pa.) kept the Lakers off the scoreboard in the eighth inning after retiring the side. Alyson Johnson was re-entered into the ballgame to leadoff in the eighth. Johnson belted a walk-off homer to beat the Lakers with a final score of 6-5.
With the two losses the Lakers are now 15-13 overall and 1-5 in conference action. The Lakers take a break from conference play tomorrow, March 30 when the host Lake Erie College in their season opener at Mercyhurst Field. Game time is set for a 3 p.m. start.
