ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College softball team was swept by the Crimson Hawks of Indiana (Pa.) today, March 26. The Crimson Hawks beat the Lakers 12-6 during the first game and 10-2 during the second.
Mercyhurst posted six runs in the first game with three runs coming during the fifth inning as the Lakers looked to make a comeback. Junior Emily Redig homered in the fifth driving in two runs helping the Lakers come within four runs of the Crimson Hawks. IUP ended game one early after scoring three runs in the bottom half of the six inning making the score 12-6.
The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when junior Samantha Eimers hit a two-run home run that drove in Redig. IUP answered in the bottom half of the inning scoring one run bring them within a run of Mercyhurst. Erin Holloway of Indiana (Pa.) shut the Lakers down not allowing a run for the rest of the game. In turn, the Crimson Hawks bat came alive scoring nine runs total in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
The losses now give the Lakers a 15-11 record heading into Tuesday's match against California (Pa.). The game will be held in California (Pa.) with the first pitch set to be thrown at 2:30 p.m.
