Eimers and Harmon Lead Lakers to a Pair of Wins

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Mercyhurst College softball team has created a four game winning streak after taking the twinbill from Wheeling Jesuit University. The Lakers overtook the Cardinals 8-0 in the first game due to a pair of homeruns from sophomore Julie Harmon. The bats of Mercyhurst never cooled down as they went on to beat the Cardinals 12-0 in five innings during the late game.

Harmon and junior Samantha Eimers led the Lakers in the first win of the day combining for all eight of the RBI.   Harmon hit two homeruns and a triple on the day driving in a season high six RBI.  Eimers also added a dinger in the first inning driving in the first runs of the afternoon.

The Lakers used a joint pitching effort with Amanda Norman starting in the pitching circle with Megan Smith acting as a reliever.  Norman would re-enter the ball game to finish off what she had started.

The Lakers equaled their highest runs in a game today (Mar.17) after crossing home plate 12 times in five innings. Eight runs came in the third inning when the Lakers batted through the lineup.

Junior Emily Redig, Eimers, and senior Michelle Schmitz registered a multi-hit game and combined to contribute six RBI. Redig went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Eimers also had three RBI and two runs scored as she went 2-4 with a homerun, the second of the day. Schmitz accounted for two runs on her way to a 2-4 showing while playing solid in the field with a team leading eight putouts. Senior Amber Rapose recorded one hit on the day but drove in two RBI and scored. Junior Andrea Sauers, freshman Courtney Smith, and sophomore Kristen Fyffe all had an RBI during the second game.

The Lakers now look to PSAC West play as they face off against cross-town rival Gannon University at Gannon. The two clash on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m.
