Softball Trounces Glenville State, 14-2

Glenville W.Va. – After posting 14 runs off of 22 hits the Mercyhurst softball team upended Glenville State, 14-2. The Lakers were led by junior Samantha Eimers who went 4-5 and contributed to two Laker six-run innings.

Eimers, junior Andrea Sauers, freshman Courtney Smith, senior Michelle Schmitz, sophomore Kristen Fyffe, junior Sydney Cusino, and senior Kara Gorgos all had a muti-hit game in today's contest. Five of the Lakers had three or more hits. Eimers led the team with four hits and three RBI. She also crossed home plate twice.

A slow start heated up in the third inning when the Lakers would bat around in a six run inning. Junior Emily Redig, Sauers, and Eimers consecutively hit extra base hits giving them each a RBI. They would all go on to score as well. Schmitz would single and later score from first after an error in the outfield. Fyffe would double to drive in the sixth run of the inning.

Glenville State answered in the bottom half of the inning scoring just one run inching them within five of the Lakers.

The 'Hurst would plate two more runs before exploding for six more runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Julie Harmon started the inning off with her fifth double of the season. Two batters later Cusino doubled giving her two RBI. Sauers, Eimers, and Smith all doubled in the inning crediting each of them with a RBI.

Amanda Norman went four and a third innings giving up five hits, two earned runs and striking out eight for her sixth victory of the year. Megan Hopton came in as relief and pitched the remainder of the game giving up only two hits and no runs.

Following the win the Lakers now hold an 11-8 overall record. The crew will stay in West Virginia and play Wheeling Jesuit at Wheeling, W.Va. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
