MIAMI, Fla. – The Mercyhurst College softball team doubled their season total of losses today, Feb.28 after dropping both games of a double-header to Barry University. The Buccaneers held Mercyhurst hitless for a 1-0 win and rallied in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Lakers 6-5.
In the first game of the twinbill Brianna Smith of Barry shut the Lakers down throwing a no-hitter through seven innings while allowing four walks in the no-hit performance. Senior
Amanda Norman pitched all six innings for the Lakers giving up only four hits on the afternoon. The only run produced in the game came when Cassie Zamora of Barry doubled into centerfield then stole third. A single off of the bat of Sarah Broeseker would score the run from third and give the Buccaneers the go ahead run.
Barry jumped out to an early lead in the second game as they scored once in the first inning. The Lakers would respond by plating two in the second inning. Junior
Andrea Sauers single produced the two runs scored putting the Lakers ahead, 2-1. Barry would score three runs in the third inning off of five hits. Both pitchers would settle in pitching three scoreless innings each. The Lakers down 5-1 would need four runs to escape the series sweep.
In the top half of the seventh inning junior
Samantha Eimers would hit her sixth homerun of the season to put the Lakers ahead by one run. In the bottom of the seventh the Buccaneers put the leadoff hitter on after a single. Barry would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. The very next batter would double into center tying the game up at 5-5. The Buccaneers would win 6-5 in walk-off fashion.
The Lakers are now 8-4 on the season and continue their road trip tomorrow March 1. As they take on Lynn in Boca Raton Fla. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Both games will be covered via live stats and live audio, follow links below to follow the Lakers.
